Rock progresywny uznawany jest za jeden z najbardziej artystycznych i intelektualnie nacechowanych nurtów muzyki popularnej. Od samego początku w latach 60. XX w. jego twórców wyróżniały wysokie ambicje, przez co stał się przestrzenią spotkania różnych idei muzycznych i estetycznych, nowych technologii i utopii modernizmu.

Jest to pierwsza monografia tego typu publikowana w Polsce, poświęcona problematyce rocka progresywnego w ujęciu dwóch wymiarów czasowych: przeszłości – od genezy i pierwotnych definicji, przez analizę klasyków, do próby odczytywania go na nowo oraz przyszłości – od fuzji metagatunkowych do krytycznego post-progressive.
